Application 3 - Carrying Out Your GAME Plan

In order to carry out my GAME plan mentioned in my previous post, there are certain resources and information that I will need to reach my goal. The first goal I set for my self, “to learn how to better present specific and relevant real-world problems that interest my students and then use the Internet and other digital means to solve them” requires the use of digital media such as Youtube and podcasts. These resources would enable me to present the most current topics that are appropriate for my students and their interests. A wiki would allow my students to collaborate in solving real-world problems and the creation of a video or other digital media would enable them to present their solutions to problems and share them in ways previously not available.

The second goal I set for my self, “to provide my students with multiple opportunities to use their varied learning styles” could be reached using strategies mentioned in this week’s learning resources. Technology can be used to reach all types and levels of learning if used appropriately by a knowledgeable teacher (Laureate 2009). The use of online tutorials, digital projects, interactive websites, graphing software, and assistive technology can help a student reach his or her potential in a way not seen before. Along with these tools I would need to do further consultation with experts and colleagues who have had experience and success using these resources. People can be just as valuable a resource as any type of literature.

  1. Jody,

You may want to check out CNN Students News which presents current events from a student's perspective. You could have your students view and discuss the news together. Pick an issue and debate that issue on video. The students in groups would have to use their persuasion and writing skills to convince the class of their perspective.

Students could also create their own wikis and use them as the vehicle to present their solutions to the problems they are investigating. They could use polling widgets, podcasts, and links as rationale for their ideas.

    Just some suggestions,

    Craig

  2. Jody,
You mention the value of colleagues as resources for finding new ways to employ technology in the service of student learning. Just as your students will be using Web 2.0 tools, such as wikis, for collaboration, do you have certain channels that you prefer for collaboration? I find that only one or two of my colleagues at the school where I work are as tech savvy as our Walden cohort, and among them, none teach in my subject area. Our head robotics coach, who I assist with the team, has extensive knowledge of software and hardware related to his field, but really cannot offer any advice about great resources for English teachers. I plan to use online forums, in addition to face-to-face opportunities, to find and collaborate with colleagues elsewhere who have access to and experience with resources I have not yet encountered or fully exploited. I know I will enjoy collaborating with classmates in the wiki during this course. Still, I really appreciate some of the texts we have used, both printed and online, for the condensed knowledge they contain.
